It follows humanity's desperate struggle for survival in a galaxy teeming with alien civilizations, ancient technology, and threats operating at scales far beyond human comprehension. But the series that people come back to, the one they think about at odd hours, is not really about galactic war. What Skippy Is

Skippy is an artificial intelligence of almost inconceivable power, created by the Elders -- an ancient species that existed billions of years ago and whose technology is so far beyond anything in the current galaxy that it might as well be magic. He is already the smartest thing in the galaxy. The danger is not that he will become too powerful. The danger is that he does not understand the rules that govern his own behavior. The pop culture references that pepper Skippy's dialogue serve a similar function. He has consumed the entirety of human culture -- every book, every film, every song, every meme -- and he references it constantly, often inappropriately. This is played for laughs. But it also reveals something important: Skippy engages with human culture not because he has to but because he wants to. He finds human creativity genuinely fascinating. He has opinions about music. Intelligence and wisdom are not the same thing. Skippy has intelligence that is, for all practical purposes, infinite. Alanson does not suggest that human intuition is better than machine intelligence. He suggests that they are complementary. Together, they are formidable. Apart, they are incomplete. The enemies Joe and Skippy face are not stupid. They are clever, resourceful, and often in possession of technology approaching Skippy's own capabilities. Defeating them requires not just raw power but Joe's ability to think sideways, to consider possibilities that fall outside the bounds of logical optimization. Again and again, the series demonstrates that the most dangerous thing in the galaxy is not the smartest entity. It is the entity that combines intelligence with the willingness to be irrational.

Skippy needs Joe for tactical creativity. But he also needs Joe for something harder to quantify: grounding. Skippy's intelligence is so vast that he can lose himself in abstraction. He can model possibilities to the point of paralysis. He can see so many options that choosing between them becomes impossible. Joe provides an anchor -- a framework for decision-making that pure intelligence cannot supply on its own: this is what matters. This is what we are fighting for. This is what we do next.

The question that dominates contemporary AI discourse -- what happens when machines become smarter than humans? -- presupposes that intelligence is the only variable that matters. The Expeditionary Force series suggests a deeper question: what happens when a system that can do anything has no reason to do one thing rather than another? Intelligence without grounding is not dangerous. It is inert. It is a god-tier capability pointed at nothing in particular. The human provides the particular.

In Skippy's case, what humans provide is meaning. He can calculate anything, but he cannot care about anything without choosing to. HAL 9000 is iconic but one-dimensional -- a threat, a cautionary tale. Data from Star Trek is beloved but ultimately explores a single question: can a machine become human? The Culture Minds in Iain Banks' novels are fascinating but operate at such remove from human experience that they are more like weather systems than characters. These are all projections of human anxieties onto machines. Skippy is something different. Skippy is what an AI might actually be like.

He is not reducible to a single function or a single question. He is not "the AI that goes bad" or "the AI that wants to be human" or "the AI that serves humanity." He is a fully realized character with contradictions, growth, vulnerabilities, and an inner life that the reader comes to understand over the course of millions of words. He is funny and profound, powerful and constrained, arrogant and insecure, ancient and childlike. He insults the people he loves. He hides his fears behind bluster. He is, in other words, a person -- rendered in silicon rather than carbon, operating on timescales and at levels of intelligence that dwarf anything biological, but a person nonetheless. And he is the only AI character in fiction who feels like he was written by someone who understands that intelligence is not a spectrum with humans at the top. R.C. Bray's audiobook narration deserves mention. His voice for Skippy -- exasperated, condescending, occasionally vulnerable -- brings the character to life in a way that text alone cannot capture. The series is arguably best experienced in audio, where the rhythms of the banter between Joe and Skippy land the way Alanson intended. The timing is everything. As in most partnerships between very different kinds of intelligence, the timing is always everything.

What Skippy Knows That the Field Does Not

The AI research community is grappling, right now, with questions that Alanson dramatizes in fictional form. What happens when you build a system smarter than its creators? How do you constrain a superintelligence? What does it mean for a powerful AI to have "values," and where do those values come from? Can raw intelligence substitute for the kind of understanding that comes from being embedded in a physical, social, mortal world?

Skippy's situation -- a superintelligence operating under constraints imposed by beings who no longer exist, trying to understand rules it did not write, gradually discovering that its own nature is more complex than it initially believed -- maps onto real concerns about alignment with a precision that is either prescient or inevitable. The Elders built Skippy with safeguards. Those safeguards were well-intentioned. They also created a being that is, in some respects, a prisoner of its own design. The parallel is not subtle. It is not supposed to be.

But the real insight is not about constraints. It is about partnership. The future of AI might not be a world where machines replace humans or a world where humans contain machines. It might be a world where the two work together, each compensating for what the other lacks. The intelligence provides capability. The human provides direction. The space between them -- that gap, that tension, that ongoing negotiation between what is possible and what matters -- is where the interesting work happens. It is where it has always happened.

What Is Left After the Argument

Craig Alanson did not set out to write a treatise on artificial intelligence. He set out to write fun, action-packed military science fiction. He succeeded. Expeditionary Force is enormously entertaining -- the kind of series where you finish one book and immediately start the next, where you find yourself laughing on public transit trying to explain that you are reading about an all-powerful alien AI who just called humanity a "barrel of monkeys with delusions of adequacy."

But the best genre fiction smuggles profound ideas inside entertaining packaging. Alanson has imagined a superintelligence that is not a threat to be feared or a tool to be used but a person to be understood -- brilliant and broken, ancient and lonely, powerful beyond measure and still, somehow, in need of a friend. The friend in question is a sergeant from Maine who likes beer and comes up with plans so crazy they just might work.

And that, in the end, might be the most important thing anyone has said about intelligence, artificial or otherwise: it does not matter how smart you are if you do not have someone to be smart for. Power without partnership is just potential. Capability without direction is just noise. The most interesting systems are not the most powerful ones. They are the ones that have found their Joe Bishop.
